At the wrapup, we will invite anyone who’s interested to read a short section from their manuscript (about two minutes), announce the winners of the various awards, distribute feedback from the judges, and have a chance to socialize with each other and whichever judges are able to make it.
After a break, there will be a free workshop from 3-4 p.m. about possible next steps to take with your marathon manuscript. One current and two former marathoners will tell the stories of their journeys from marathon to published book or agent acquisition and offer tips to help you on your own path. This will be followed by a Q & A session and general discussion.
The three panelists are Cheryl Cooper, Kevin Craig and Erin Thomas. Here are their bios:
CHERYL COOPER has been living in Bracebridge for 23 years now with her husband and her two sons. She is a former teacher of the Hearing Impaired, having worked at the Metro Toronto School for the Deaf, and is presently an Acquisitions Editor for both Blue Butterfly Books and Muskoka Books. In her spare time, she works closely with disadvantaged children and teenagers-in-crisis in her community, providing free tutoring services, counselling, and sometimes a safe home in which to stay. She also raises funds for clothing, camps, and sporting activities through her work with the Children’s Foundation of Muskoka. Cheryl recently made her book-publishing debut with her novel, Come Looking For Me, a work of historical fiction, set on the high seas during the War of 1812, which had its beginnings in the Muskoka Novel Marathon.
KEVIN CRAIG is a poet, playwright and novelist. His fiction and poetry has been published internationally. Kevin’s memoir has appeared in the Globe & Mail, Dear Teen Me and on CBC Radio Canada. He sits on the Board of Directors for the Ontario Writers' Conference. Kevin has had three plays produced by Driftwood Theatre. His debut young adult novel, Summer on Fire, was published in July, 2011. He is currently represented by Terrie Wolf of AKA Literary.
ERIN THOMAS is a five-time MNM participant and the author of three published books for reluctant readers (Boarder Patrol, Orca; Draco's Fire and Wolves at the Gate, H.I.P. Books). Boarder Patrol was a Canadian Children's Book Centre 'Best Books for Kids & Teens 2011' selection. Two more books (Haze, Orca; Overboard, H.I.P. Books) are slated for publication in Spring 2012. Erin has worked as a technical writer, a freelance editor and an occasional teacher, along with some less appealing jobs in her teen years. She currently writes full time and is an active member of CANSCAIP and of her local writing community. She is represented by the Anne McDermid & Associates Literary Agency.
