About this Session:

Amy Stuart at MNM2010

In 2010, I signed up for the Muskoka Novel Marathon with the idea to write a few short stories to add to my collection. But in the week leading up to the event, inspiration hit: What if a woman gone missing somehow found herself searching for another woman in the same situation? That was the premise. I put together some notes and showed up with my laptop to write as furiously as I could.

I emerged from that weekend with about 50 pages of a manuscript. I was thrilled when my pages won the Fiction category, but more than that, I felt buoyed and inspired by the other writers I’d met in that room. Over the next two years, I worked to finish the manuscript. How did I get from that finished first draft – my first novel, Still Mine – to, several years later, that novel hitting #1 on the bestseller list? It was a combination of timing, good fortune, advocacy and hard work.

In this workshop, I’ll take you through the steps that got me from the writers’ room at the MNM to the bestseller list. The key is to focus on what you can control and to accept what you can’t. It’s about understanding the industry, listening humbly to the experts, learning as much as you can, and of course, writing the best novel you’ve got. I’ll provide you with practical steps and advice and answer any questions you have about my career, and yours!
